​Levels of Crimes in Texas
Crimes are classified as either felonies or misdemeanors. The Texas Legislature has put in place sentencing guidelines based on the level of crime. Here are the levels of crimes from least punishable to most punishable:
Class C misdemeanor

no more than a $500 fine and you cannot be sentenced to jail time.
State Jail Felony

This is the lowest level felony. No more than a $2,000 fine, possibly spend between 180 days and two years in jail, or probation.
First Degree Felony

fines of up to $10,000, a prison sentence between 5 – 99 years (or life), or probation.
Class B misdemeanor

no more than a $2,000 fine, up to 180 days in county jail, and up to three years of probation.
Third Degree Felony

fines of up to $10,000, a prison sentence between two and ten years, or probation.
Capital Felony
-
life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Class A misdemeanor

no more than a $4,000 fine, up to a year in the county jail, and up to three years of probation.
Second Degree Felony

fines of up to $10,000, a prison sentence between 2 – 20 years, or probation.
